Srinagar Garhwal

Srinagar is the largest city in Garhwal Himalayas, situated on the banks of Alaknanda River. Srinagar caters a large number of tourist’s inflow every year and majority of them are during Char Dham Yatra. The Srinagar Garhwal city is Situtated in Pauri District in State of Uttarakhand in Northern India. The place is centrally located from Kotdwar, Rishikesh, Tehri Gharwal and Badrinath. The place was once the capital of the Kings of Garhwal. The name of the place is derived from Srixantra chunk where people were sacrificed to death to satisfy the heavenly power. The convention of killing people was stopped by Ali Guru Snakaracharya by throwing the chunk into river Alakhnanda. Todays , Srinagar is a major economic, cultural, and educational center in the region.

History and Legends

After Becoming the Garhwal Kingdom , Srinagar came into limelight. The King Ajay Pal was founded the Garhwal kingdom during 1506-1512 CE and and shifted the capital to Srinagar place from Chandpur Garhi.The Gorkhas defeated the Nepali king and occupied Kathmandu. The Srinagar was under Gorkha rule from 1806 to 1815 CE . After the Gorkhas were Defeated by the British , Srinager become a part of British Garhwal . The old Srinagar city was destroyed in the Gohna Lake dam-burst which destroyed all the old relics of the town.Today the town is an important cultural and educational center. Being placed in central Garhwal at a moderate height, it is an important Valley Bazar in the hills. It has a number of temples and monuments and places for tourists to stay.

Char Dham Yatra and Srinagar

Srinagar Garhwal (optionally) act a base camp towards the holy Hindu temples of Badrinath and Kedarnath, during Char Dham Yatra. Srinagar is the last night stop towards the holy Hindu temples of “Badrinath” and “Kedarnath“. Baikunth Chaturdashi Mela is the main festival celebrated in Srinagar that is fall in the month of October or November where artists from across the country perform various cultural shows.

By Air : Jolly Grant airport, Dehradun is the nearest Airport located about 150 km away from Srinagar city.

By Train : Rishikesh and Kotdwara Railway Station is the nearest Rail-head whereas Rishikesh is located about 4.8 kilometres away from Srinagar.
