History

Yamunotri Dham open for pilgrims every year in the month of April-May on auspicious day of Akshay Tritya. The holy shrine closed after the Diwali festival on Bhai Dooj. The Yamunotri shrine gets closed for pilgrims for six months during winters.

Located at an height of 3293 mtrs, the holy Yamunotri shrine is the source of river Yamuna. The actual source of Yamuna river is located at Champasar glacier, which is unaccesible, so Goddess Yamuno is worship at the foothills. As per legends, Yamuna is believed to be the daughter of God Sun and has special sacredness in Hinduism.

Yamunotri temple darshan timings – 06:30 AM – 07:30 PM

Yamunotri is completely flocked by pilgrims during the yatra season (May to Oct). Pilgrims should avoid visiting Yamunotri during monsoon season. May, June, Sept & October are some best months to visit Yamunotri.

Yamunotri is located at high altitude and surrounded by beautiful hills. Yamunotri Dham has pleasant climate in summers and very cold in winters. During the monsoon season, it receives medium to heavy rainfall blocking road route sometimes due to landslides.

Registration for Yamunotri or Chardham Yatra can be done at various counters free of cost. Or you can do it online too. Registration counters are available at Haridwar, Rishikesh and Janki Chatti. Yes, it is totally safe to visit Yamunotri Dham. It receives large number of pilgrims in the yatra season every year. Though in monsoon, pilgrim turnout drop down due to rain.

Yamunotri has only few small hotels for the accommodation. Pilgrims can stay at hotels in Janki Chatti and Syan Chatti located few kms before the Yamunotri Dham.

Yamunotri Dham remains open for only 6 months, so there are temporary hotels and restaurants serving food during the yatra season. These dhabas or restaurant serves basic vegetarian food such as Parantha, Dal, Roti, Sabji, Chawal, Maggi etc.

Yes, Yamunotri is well connected by road till Janaki Chatti. Pilgrims can drive to Janaki Chatti on car or bike. They can park vehicles and start the trek of 5 kms to Yamunotri. Only care should be taken during monsoon as there may be landslides blocking road to Yamunotri.

Yamunotri Dham is located at 230 kms from Haridwar and 412 kms from Delhi. It is well connected by metalled road with Haridwar & Delhi till Janaki Chatti. Pilgrims need to trek 5 kms to reach Yamunotri from Janaki Chatti. Nearest railway head is Haridwar railway station. Flights are available from Delhi to Dehradun (Jolly Grant Aiport) which is 200 kms away from Yamunotri. From Haridwar, one can board bus to Yamunotri or hire a car. You can easily travel to Yamunotri on your own. Yamunotri has comfortable accommodation facilities. There are buses to Yamunotri available from Haridwar bus station or one can also hire taxi if it finds in budget. You can hire a cab or book a Yamunotri tour package at SacredYatra.com !!

Yes, vehicles can only reach till Janki Chatti and pilgrims need to trek 5 kms to reach the temple.

No, the trek is not much difficult and has only few steep points on the route. One can also avail facilities of Kandi, Palki and Mules.

The cost of Dandi/ Palki, Kandi & Mule/ Ponies are regulated by the administration and one can get them booked at fixed price from booking counter at Janki Chatti (at last end of the market).

For different distances, there are different rates. Such as for Jankichatti to Yamunotri, Dandi will cost INR 1900/-, Kandi will cost INR 840/- and Pony will cost INR 640/-. Check complete Dandi, Kandi & Mules rates at Yamunotri .
