Gangotri is one of the most revered shrine in India and a holy Dham visited by number of pilgrims each year. The Gangotri shrine open its gates for pilgrims darshan every year in the month of April-May on auspicious day of Akshay Tritya. The holy shrine closed after the Diwali festival on Bhai Dooj. The Gangotri shrine gets closed for pilgrims for six months during winters.

Gangotri is located in high altitude near the frozen glacier, Gangotri glacier. In the summer months from May to October, the weather remains pleasant. In between these months, monsoon receives mid to heavy rainfall. Gangotri also receives heavy snowfall in winters.
Gangotri has only few small hotels for the accommodation. Pilgrims can also stay at hotels in Uttarkashi, Gangnani and Harsil located few kms before the Gangotri Dham.
Gangotri Dham remains open for only 6 months, so there are temporary hotels and restaurants serving food during the yatra season. These dhabas or restaurant serves basic vegetarian food such as Parantha, Dal, Roti, Sabji, Chawal, Maggi etc.
Gangotri Dham can be easily visited from Haridwar or Delhi. There are regular yatra buses available from Haridwar to Gangotri or one can take local/ roadways bus service to Uttarkashi and further travel by taxi. Gangotri is situated at 290 kms from Haridwar and 508 kms from Delhi. Haridwar is the nearest rail head to reach Gangotri. Domestic airpost at Jolly Grant Dehradun has connecting flights to Delhi at every hour. It is 270 kms from Gangotri. From Haridwar, one can board bus to Gangotri or hire a car.
