Winter Char Dham circuit was started back in 2014 to promote the tourism of Uttarakhand during winters as well. The gates to all these Winter Dhams will remain open for devotees making the Char Dham Yatra a year long affair.
The deities from all four Dhams – Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath are relocated to shrines of Kharsali, Mukhva, Ukhimath and Yogdhyan Badri Temple (Pandukeshwar) respectively for the six months of winter.
Traditionally, the pilgrimage of Char Dhams starts in May and ends in October with the start of winters. As the Shrines receive heavy snowfall during winters and are inaccessible, the Idols and symbols are moved to nearby Temples which remain open during winters.
