About Badhangarhi Temple

Badhangarhi temple which is also known as Maa Badhangarhi Mandir, is an ancient Hindu temple which is dedicated to Kali. This temple is worshipped as Maa DakshineshwarKaali or Bhagwati. The people living in the places around like Tharali, Naranbagar, Dewal block of Chamoli and Garur, Kapkot block of Bageshwar have a real faith in this temple. It is a popular deity in that region. The Badhangarhi temple is situated in Tharali tehsil of Chamoli Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. It is situated around 8 km from Gwaldam which is nearest town to Badhangarhi temple. The temple is situated at the elevation of about 2260m.

Badhangarhi Temple Legends and Mythology

There are many popular legends and mythology related to this temple. It was believed that this tabernacle was a part of Badhangarhi which was one of the 52 garh of Garhwal positioned at the left bank of Pindar Swash. According to the legends, the original tabernacle was erected by katyuri king, who ruled this region at the time of 8th to 12th century. Badhangarhi was made from two words that is badhan and garhi. Badhan means pargana or Chamoli Garhwal and Grahi means a stronghold, which is positioned at the tip of the mountain.

The fort that belong to king was only at a distance of 8 km from Gwaldam. You can drive to taal square for 4 km and further 4 km can be reached on foot. There are the temples of Goddess Bhagwati and Dakshin Kali at the end point of the stairs from binatal square. From there you can enjoy the view of the whole katyur valley. You can also see the beautiful mountain ranges mainly Chokhamba, Hathi, Ghoda, Nanda Ghunti, Trishul, Nanda Devi, Kakot bandar poonch, Panchachuli, Nanda kot, Nandakht are the main.

Best Time To Visit Badhangarhi Temple

The best time to visit Badhangarhi temple is between the months of October to April. Travelling and worshipping for people is enjoyable and adventurous at this point of time.

During winter, the weather of this place is very cold and due to heavy snowfall at this place and on the surroundings hills at winter, the temperature here goes down very much, so it will be very difficult for you to travel.

Due to heavy rain in the rainy season there are a heavy chances frequent landslides which will make it very difficult for you to travel here. The roads are slippery and there is a high risk if you go there in the time of rain.

By Rail – Kathgodam is the closet station to Gwaldam. It is located at a distance of 169 km before Gwaldam. Kathgodam is well connected to much of India. Taxis and buses are easily available from kathgodam station in Gwaldam.

By Road – Gwaldam is a place that is well connected to roads. It is accessible from the Garhwal area and the Kumaon area. Buses and taxis are easily available to Gwaldam from towns in Garhwal and Kumaon regions. It is 36 km from Kausani, 22 km from Bajinath, and only 149 km from Nainital.
