The Baleshwar temple is situated in Baleshwar that is 76 km from Pithoragarh within the city of Champawat in Uttarakhand. The temple is at a height of 1610 meters from the sea level and found in the Kumaon region of the lower Himalayan mountains. The temple of Baleshwar is the most artistic in that area. It was built by the rulers of Chand dynasty.

There are no historical manuscripts that dates the construction of Baleshwar temple, but it was believed that this temple was build between 10- 12 century A.D.
As per the historical record it was believed that the Himalayan tribals used to pray Lord shiva for their protection in the mountain valleys from avalanches. The Hindus also believed that the Himalayas were the adobe of Lord Shiva and also that he has meditated all around the ranges. This temple of Baleshwar is also built for such importance to honor him in his heavenly adobe on earth. In the medieval times these were converted in the famous pilgrim places.
Baleshwar temple was built by the Chand dynasty who ruled the Kumaon region from 10- 12 century A.D. the architecture of this temple is very much appreciated as there is no other temple that has such stone art works in the mountain’s temple. This temple of Baleshwar is made up in the Hindu temple art form of those found in south India. The structure used in this temple is granite which is found in uniquely carved Hindu designs. The stones that are used in building of this temple has every minute detail in it. There are also few inscriptions found on the stones. There are also three temples that are made up of same compound. One is the female deity and the other two are made up for male deity.
These temples are really elegant with their medium heights and shapes. These temples are found in square shape and have a pyramid tower on the main Garbha Graha (sanctum sanctorum). There are many carved sculptures on the outer and inner parts of the temple from the same stone blocks and these also have many frieze arts. Along with the temple structure there are lovely motifs. There are few mandaps built here with a pediment on it.
The ceiling inside the main temple is the most important stone art that you can found here. The upper tower under side has a remarkable carving works. These all can be done only by some skilled artisans. Due to such presence of architecture this temple is listed in the heritage temple list of India.
The temple of Baleshwar at Champawat has been declared as the National Heritage Monument and is also looked by the archaeological survey of India (ASI) since 1952. At the Champawat city has grown up, many residential buildings have been built up along with the Baleshwar temple. These buildings can harm this national heritage because of many reasons such as pollution, garbage and also can harm its look and surroundings. But the archeological survey is not doing anything to protect this temple and to do something about the buildings around it.
Baleshwar temple is famous for many reasons
Lord shiva is called as Baleshwar here since he was a young boy. This temple has deities of Champawati Durga and the God Ratneshwar apart from the deities of lord Shiva. A natural spring water pond known as Naula is also found here. Many devotees visit this temple and drink this water as a holy water. This temple is also visited by different sects of Hindus apart from the Shivaties. This place is filled with devotees throughout the year, and it is also a pilgrim place. The daily poojas are especially important part of this temple and many do participate and conducts few special poojas for getting some revelations.
The main festival which is celebrated at the Baleshwar temple is Maha Shivratri. On the occasion of Maha Shivratri this temple is filled with thousands of pilgrims and also devotees from all over the world come at this occasion to get the blessings of Lord Shiva. The temple of Baleshwar is filled with many vendors and stalls on this special pooja day selling various crafts and arts of the local culture. All the people who take the Haridwar pilgrimage will come and visit these temples on the uttarakhand festival that will last for 2 months, from august to September. On these occasions many devotees will come here and get the blessings of ultimate god Baleshwar or the divine person.
