Legends has that the temple is ancient temple which dates back to Dwapara yuga. There was a powerful person Bheem second among the Pandavas. Once at the time of his exile he was climbing the mountain ranges of Himalayas. Suddenly on his way a divine voice came from the sky that tells him if he wished to be recognized for generations, he should erect a shiva temple with full devotion. He was a true shiva devotee, so he erected a temple for Lord Shiva from the mountain in that place.
Bheema is a giant and powerful being and he has the power of 100 elephants. He used his mace and breaks the mountain. From there the ganga flows and the water from ganga flowed and formed a lake which is known as Bhimtal lake. Later on, he consecrates Shiva Lingam here.
