About Buddha Temple, Dehradun

Buddha temple is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Dehradun. It is located in Clement town and is regarded as one of the largest Buddhist centers in India. Buddhist have built this temple with a motive to preserve and promote Tibetan culture in India. This temple has its own primary and secondary school of Buddhist, guest house and a community prayer hall.

This temple is popular for its marvellous architecture, charming interiors and the colorful murals that depict the life of the Gautam Buddha. Great Stupa is one of the major attractions of the Buddha temple. It was inaugurated in 2002. The artwork of this great stupa is a marvel of Buddhist art. It is about 220 feet in height and 100 square feet in width.

History of Budhha Temple, Dehradun

This temple of Buddha is a very high celebrated Tibetan religious site. In late 1965 this temple was built by Kochen Rinpoche and few other monks. The aim of this temple was to protect the religious and cultural understanding off Buddhism. It is a replica of the original temple monastery in Tibet. It was built as one of the four Tibetan religion schools and named ‘Nyingma’ or old translation school.

There are also other three schools

  • Sakya
  • Kagy
  • Geluk

They all have great importance in their Tibetan religion.

Architecture of Buddha Temple

The buddha temple is made by a unique Japanese style architecture. It was believed that 50 artists together made this unique design of the temple and paintings. This temple was built in about 3 years. It has five floors which enshrine the idols of Lord Buddha and Guru Padmasambhava.

First three floors of the temple are decorated with intricate gold color wall paintings. The fourth floor consists of an open platform, from where you can see a panoramic view of the Dehradun valley.

Buddha Temple – Mindrolling Monastery

Buddha temple in Dehradun is believed to be the largest Buddhist reliquary in Asia, and it is also visited by thousands of tourists as well as by the international Buddhism lovers. This temple is dedicated to the spiritual guru of Tibetan people, Dalai Lama. There are also well-maintained beautiful gardens and grass field which give a tranquil atmosphere and this view surrounds the temple.

There is also a shopping complex in the temple complex which has series of shopping and eating shops. You can also find a good collection of books in the Tibetan language and holy books about Buddhism as well. There are also the shops that sell clothes, artifacts, handicrafts made by the Buddhist people.

There are about 5 hundred lamas that live and study in this place. Buddha temple authorities take care of the lamas and also provide them free accommodation, clothing, food, and many other facilities. Temple garden and the shops and open for full week but the temple remains closed for Sunday only for public. Visitors are also requested to remove shoes before entering the main hall of Buddha temple.

There is also shoe check at the temple, where they will provide you with a token at a nominal fair. The authorities have also placed many dustbins in the Buddha Garden so that there is no litter around and the environment remains clean.

This temple has its own uniqueness and popularity among the people. You can visit this temple throughout the year. The best time to visit this temple is also all over the year. This temple is situated in the middle of the city, so the weather is always normal and pleasant. There are very less chances of landslides at this place and there are also no harsh weather conditions as well.

You can visit this temple anytime but on Sundays the temple remains closed only the complex is open. So, it is advisable to visit this place anytime from Monday to Saturday.

Exploration Time : The exploration time of this temple is 2 hr. approx. You can entry the temple with a nominal fee and they will give you tokens to enter in the temple.
Timings : The timings to visit this temple is from 7 am to 7 pm.
Distance from ISBT Dehradun : Distance of this temple from ISBT is 5 km and it will take you about 20 mins to reach the temple.

By Air : The nearest railway station to reach Buddha Temple is Jolly Grant. It is about 36 km away from the temple and it is the closest air connectivity to this temple. You can take a taxi or cab to reach to the temple destination. Buses are also available; you can also take them to reach to your destination.

By Train : The nearest railway station to reach the Buddha temple is Dehradun railway station. This station is 10 km away from the temple. You can take a taxi or cab to reach to your temple destination. You can also take local transport system to reach the temple.

By Road : Dehradun is well connected with the roads and highways as well as express ways. You can take the bus to clement town, which is available from Parade ground and rajpur. Alternatively, you can also take the Vikram no 5 from survey chowk. It will drop you to your temple destination.
