About Budha Madmaheshwar

Budha Madmaheshwar is a temple which is situated in the Gaundar village of Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarakhand. It is a Hindu temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is situated at an elevation of 3497 m from the sea level. It is one of the Panch Kedar pilgrimage circuit, which comprises of five shiva temples in the Garhwal region.

The other temples that are in this circuit are Kedarnath, Tungnath and Rudra Nath to be visited before Madmaheshwar and Kalpesh war to be visited after this temple. This temple was believed to be built by the Pandavas, the survivors of the Hindu epic Mahabharata.

Budha madmaheshwar is located 2 km away from Madmaheshwar temple and it also offers one of the best views of Chaukhambha peaks. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is also known as Mahadev.

History and Legend of Budha Madmaheshwar Temple

Many people believe that the legend about the Garhwal region, shiva and the creation of Panch Kedar are all narrated.

The legend has that the story is an integral part of the legend of Panch Kedar. There were the efforts of the Pandavs to atone their sins as they kill their cousins, the Kauravas and Brahmanahatya during the epic

Mahabharata war. Then by the advice of the saints and their god benefactor Lord Krishna they sought Lord Shiva to pardon them and bless them to attain salvation.

Shiva was annoyed with them for their role in the war, he then tried to avoid them by taking the animal form of a bull or a Nandi and hid himself in the Himalayan Garhwal region. Then after seeing shiva in the form of a bull grazing the hills in Garhwal region, the Pandavas tried to hold the tail and hands of the bull forcibly. Then the bull form of the lord disappeared, and it reappear later in his original form in five different places, in the form of a hump in Kedarnath, in the shape of Bahu in Tungnath, in the shape of face at Rudra Nath, his nabhi and with stomach in Madmaheshwar and his hair in Kalpeshwar.

Pandavas then to attain the salvation built the temples at these five places and worshipped the lord with full devotion.

By Air : The nearest airport to reach the temple is Jolly grant which is at a distance of 18 km from Rishikesh. Madmaheshwar temple is 244 km from the airport and 227 km from Rishikesh.

By Train : The nearest railway station is at Haridwar, Rishikesh, Kotdwar and Dehradun.
