Legends has that this is the place where the Mata Chandika killed Mahishasur and that is why this temple is known as Ma Mahishasur Mardini.

According to Srimad Devi Bhadvatham, devi Durga killed mahishasura after a fierce battle with the mighty demon using the mighty disc of Chakra as the weapon and severed the head of the evil demon Mahishasura.

Then at that place a temple of Chandika devi was established here to honor and remember the Mata Durga.
