History

When does Badrinath temple open & closed?

Badrinath temple open for pilgrims every year in the month of April-May. Exact date is decided on auspicious day of Basant Panchami by the priests. The holy shrine closed after the Diwali festival and exact date of closing is decided on Vijaydashmi. The Bedarnath shrine gets closed for pilgrims for six months as it receives heavy snowfall during winters, making it difficult to visit.

What is the Importance of Badrinath Dham for the Hindus?

Lord Vishnu is referred as ‘Badri’ in many sacred books of Hinduism. Badrinath Dham is known to be the home of Lord Vishnu. As per Skand Puran, in 8 AD, Adiguru Shankaracharya recovered the idol of Lord Badrinath from Narad Kund. He later constructed the temple and placed the idol here.

In other hand Badrinath Dham also mentioned in Vamana Purana. The fifth avatar of Lord Vishnu, Nar & Narayana sages perform penance here. Other mythology is that Pandavas with Draupadi visited the place during their last pilgrimage to Swargarohini.

What are the best months to visit Badrinath Temple?

Badrinath is throng by pilgrims during the whole yatra season (May to Oct). Since located in high Himalayas, one should avoid visiting Badrinath during monsoon season. May, June, Sept & October are some best months to visit Badrinath.

How is the weather conditions at Badrinath?

During monsoon pilgrim stats drop down to 3000-4000 daily. But from September till closing of the shrine, more than 10,000 pilgrims visit per day.

Badrinath is located at 540 kms from Delhi and 320 kms from Haridwar. Badrinath Yatra can be starts either from Delhi or Haridwar. Badrinath is well connected by metalled road with Haridwar & Delhi. One can drive to Badrinath easily. Other modes of travel include Bus and Train. Flights are available from Delhi to Dehradun (Jolly Grant Aiport) which is 311 kms away from Badrinath. One can also travel to Rishikesh which is only 20 kms from the airport.
