There is a crisis on the state flower Brahmakamal. The state flower has bloomed about a month ago in Kedarnath Dham. There are 42 flowers in the Brahmavatika of the police, in which some flowers have taken their full shape. Though the blossoming of flowers, Brahmavatika remains a center of attraction for the pilgrims, but experts do not regard this situation as auspicious. They say that according to the ecological system, blossoming of Brahmakamal before its time is not an auspicious sign. The protection of this rare flower has to be done seriously.
The impact of global warming on the state flower Brahmakamal is clearly visible. Brahmakamal is found at an altitude of 16,000 feet above sea level. Due to the change in weather and temperature in the middle Himalaya after the disaster in 2013, the state flower is blooming well ahead of its time. The special thing is that this flower has blossomed in the third week of May about 5000 feet below its origin place in Kedarnath, while in other high altitude areas like Vasukital, Dugdh and Madhu Ganga, its plant is barely increased from two to three inches. Around a dozen plants of Brahmakamal were bloomed in flowering Brahmavatika, which was established by Police Department in Kedarnath on 20th May this year.
These plants have taken its full form of flower a week ago. Here are 42 flowers of Brahmakamal. Apart from this, around 168 plants are growing fast in the vatika. Not only that, Other than Brahmakamal, grasses found in high Himalayan areas and other species grasses, as well as many plants of Bhrigraj are also blooming in the Brahmavatika.
In Kedarnath, blossoming of the state flower about one and a half months before its original time is not auspicious for the ecosystem. Plant which is growing at a height of 16 thousand feet above sea level is now growing up to more than four thousand feet is raising many questions.
Prabhakar Semwal, a researcher working on Brahmakamal for the past four years, “ points out that after the disaster there has been a change in the time of flowering blossom and growing of the plant of Brahmakamal. Temperature in Kedarnath does not remain the same. In such a way, it will be important to see the life cycle of this flower.”
Here, according to Dr. Vijaykant Purohit and Dr. BS Mingwal, “premature bloom in Brahmakmal’s at a high temperature place is a matter of broad study. There is nothing to be said about the future of this flower by taking stock of the situation there.”
According to Jagat Singh Jungli, (Enviromentalist Rudraprayag) “There is a need to think seriously about the protection of Brahmakamal. Blooming of Brahmakamal in the area of several thousand feet below its original location is a direct example of climate change. So it is important to limit human and mechanical activities in areas such as Kedarnath.”
